GENERAL INFO

The pattern of IELTS exam

IELTS exam has 2 genres: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training.

IELTS Academic genre is for the students who want to pursue a Graduate or a Post-Graduate degree or any vocational course. It is a mandatory exam and the first requirement to apply for a student visa. The test is also requisite for professional courses like nurses and doctors or any other healthcare professional.

IELTS General Training genre is for a work permit or PR (Permanent Residency). The GT exam has the same modules as the academic. The difference lies in the difficulty level and the type of questions. A student can register himself/herself either online at the IELTS official Indian website or offline at the nodal center of your city.

Listening

The listening section measures the grasping ability of the listener. The examiner plays 4 different audio clips in different English accents. The student has to listen very attentively to answer 40 questions from 4 sections in 30 minutes. Out of the 4 audio clips generally, two clips are monologue sets and the rest two are conversation.

The listening module is the same in both the genres of IELTS.

Reading

The reading section of IELTS academic has 3 different reading passages to comprehend. The student’s understanding of the passage is tested to see if the pupil can acknowledge the main idea, theme, or passage details. A total of 40 questions has to be answered in 60 minutes. Usually, the passages are from academic texts, journals, and magazines.

The General genre also has 3 passages. The first 2 passages contain two or three short texts. And the third one has a long text. The texts can be from newspapers, advertisements, notices, fictional and non-fictional extracts from books.

Writing

The section assesses the student’s creative writing skills based on vocabulary, lexicon, and grammar usage. The writing module of the IELTS academic has 2 distinct tasks. The first task acquaints the student with a graph, table, chart or a pie diagram. It is a descriptive writing task of 20 minutes. The student reviews and writes the study in his/her own words. Task 2 would be an essay to express a response to a view, argument or problem and last 40 minutes. A student writes both the task in a formal style.

In the General genre, a student writes a letter requesting some information, or expressing some situation. The letter can be a formal or a semi-formal letter. Task 2 is the same in academics as well as in general. The only difference is that the general writing task 2 can sound personal or informal.

Speaking

The speaking test section is usually administered on a different date, usually within a week after or before the written exam. The speaking exam lasts for 10-15 minutes. It has 3 distinct tasks. The examiner wants to test the expertise of the candidate in the English language.
Like the listening module, the speaking module is also the same for both genres.

IELTS paper-based VS. computer-based

Now the students have the option to give IELTS exam on the computer as well. For the paper-based test, the answers had to be written on paper, but for the computer-based, the answers had to be typed on the computer. The speaking module of IELTS remains the same for paper-based as well as computer-based.

IELTS FEE

In India, the IELTS test fee has been revised to INR 14,000/- after April 1, 2021.
